In September 2009, Andhra Chief Minister, Mr YSR Reddy of the Congress died in a helicopter accident. His son, Jaganmohan Reddy immediately demanded to be made Chief Minister in his father's place. When denied, he resigned from Congress and his seat in Parliament, formed his own party and won the subsequent bye election with overwhelming majority. He is now being investigated for criminally amassing a fortune, rumored at Rs 400 billion, up from Rs 7 million just 6 years ago. Now 26 Congress MLAs and 2 MPs have resigned their seats in his support. This is our great democracy where the Chief Minister post is seen as family property to be passed down from father to son, where a politician can collect any amount of money with complete impunity until he falls out with party bosses and where other politicians resign in anger at investigation of corruption. In the UK Lord Hanningfield and members of the Commons, Jim Devine and Eric Illsley have served prison terms for fiddling their expenses. IN the US, Rod R. Blagojevich, governor of Illinois is facing prison for conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. He has been banned from holding public office in Illinois for life. Former Presidential contender, John Edwards is facing a $ 1.5 million fine and 30 years in prison on felony charges. In India the Chief Minister of Bihar installed his illiterate wife in his place when charged with looting Rs 9.5 billion in the fodder scam and is even now a member of parliament. He is safe because he is a coalition partner of the ruling Congress. Is it any wonder that the scum are fighting dirty to scuttle a strong ombudsman.
