At a recruitment centre for police constables in Mumbai one person was killed and at least eleven others were injured in a stampede. One hundred thousand application forms had been distributed for recruiting 3600 police constables, the lowest rank in the force. Around 40000 aspirants had gathered at Kalina police grounds to submit their applications when people at the back started pushing forward crushing those at the front. Why would so many apply for a job which is poorly paid, has long working hours in very bad conditions and is despised by the public. The reason is that most are not applying for salaries but the opportunities for taking bribes and becoming rich quickly. A minuscule number would be idealistic and actually have dreams of serving the community but this idealism will quickly evaporate in the harsh reality of life. They will be asked to stand in the hot sun for hours to protect criminal politicians, the very people they should be arresting. They will be asked to risk their lives to arrest terrorists who will then be freed by the courts. They will be asked by their senior officers to cover up crimes committed by the rich and powerful. Senior officers, the Rathores of this world, will expect them to hound a teenage girl into committing suicide after molesting her. They may even be slapped by any filthy two bit politician. Some years back the daughter of the Rustic Bandit slapped a policeman in Mumbai for some imagined slight without any punishment. Politicians pass laws which are written by kleptocrats. They have no interest in an effective and honorable police. So young men risk their lives just to get bribes. Great.
