Sitting 10000 miles away President Obama's State of the Union speech was impressive indeed. Last week promised to fight and he came out swinging. He started by laying the blame for the present mess on the Bush/Cheney combine. He laid out his plans for the future on education, small businesses, college loans, child allowance and healthcare. He challenged the Republicans to expose all lobbyists and who they are contacting on a single website. He really threw down the gauntlet, rather he shoved it down Republican throats, when he said to leave all pettiness aside and not to oppose every bill. He squarely put the responsibility of governance on their shoulders by saying that the opposition has a duty towards the people and not just scoring points with a view to reelection. While the Democrats cheered lustily the Republicans sat glumly giving the impression of a bunch school bullies being lectured to by the headmaster. Whether this speech alone will improve the prospects of the Democrats in November remains to be seen but if Mr. Obama follows up with strong pressure on the Republicans in public he could cause an upset or two. However, over the last year I have the impression that Mr. Obama reacts after a lag period. Perhaps it is his nature to ponder deeply and take every opinion before making up his mind but it gives the impression of indecision, almost as if his thyroid is not at hundred percent. Waiting five days before sending troops to Haiti was a terrible waste of time and lives. If you are going to help these people why wait for so many to die before making up your mind? Still, today was his day. Sarah did you get it?
