One Mr. Omprakash Valmiki, a dalit writer, has said, ' Being called a Hindu is like a gaali ( abuse ) to me.' Raw hatred indeed. What made brahmins an upper caste? They did themselves. What made kshatriyas a martial caste? They did themselves. Why are dalits still dalits 63 years after independence? Because they wish to be. Having a Schedule Caste, SC or Schedule Tribe, ST certificate is like a winning lottery ticket. Students with abysmal marks just walk into elite educational institutions. Useless undeserving people get cushy government jobs with automatic promotions not because of the quality of their work but only because they are dalits. Gujjars are fighting pitched battles to be classed as ST. One lady has gone all the way to Bombay High Court to maintain her SC status even though married to an upper caste man. Mr. Omprakash, you may call it whatever you wish, I call it begging. Unlike you I am proud to be a Hindu. My family were penniless refugees from what is now Bangladesh and I can tell how much my parents struggled to bring us up. They did not beg. If your people want respect tell them to withdraw their outstretched hands, stand up straight, look us in the eye and say,' WE ARE EQUAL.' You will find that suddenly all differences will disappear. Mr. Omprakash, do you have the guts or will you continue to stew in your hate brought on by self pity?
