Couple of days ago one Egyptian soldier was shot dead by Palestinians at the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza. The confrontation arose because Egypt is building a steel wall along the border with American assistance to stop smuggling between Egypt and Gaza. The Palestinians dig deep tunnels under the border and use them to smuggle in food, fuel and other necessities and also arms and parts to make rockets to fire indiscriminately into Israel. This led to the bombing of Gaza by the Israelis in 2008. Hamas, which controls Gaza, is a thuggish terrorist organisation and insists it has a right to kill Israelis. Hamas is not satisfied with controlling just Gaza but wants to control the West Bank as well. To accomplish its aims Hamas thugs regularly kill and beat up Fatah members who are also Palestinians. Hamas leaders are furious that Egypt, an Arab country, is building this wall which will stop their illegal activities but no country can allow its territory to be abused without asserting control. Moreover Hamas is controlled by Iran which is an even bigger threat for Arabs. Unless Arabs have the courage to take on Hamas and Hezbollah they could find themselves being overrun by Shia Iran. This may well have been the first shot in that war.
