The day will come.
"US Congressional leaders on Friday (yesterday) invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and Senate on June 22, one of the highest honors Washington affords foreign dignitaries." Reuters. "During your address, you will have the opportunity to share your vision for India's future and speak to the global challenges our countries both face," House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a letter to Modi. Can't get more bipartisan than that. Earlier, "US President Joe Biden...asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his autograph after discovering how he has been managing large crowds." India Today. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is 'The Boss', his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese said... at a grand community event in Sidney for the Indian diaspora." NDTV. Bruce Springsteen is known as "The Boss". The third G20 tourism meeting was held in Srinagar, at which "The government claimed an 'overwhelming response' - the highest among all G20 gatherings so far - to the meeting from member countries and special invitees." TOI. China, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt stayed away. Strangely, amidst all these hugs and fulsome praises by leaders of rich nations, India's relations with Britain, which has a Hindu Prime Minister of Indian origin in Rishi Sunak, could smell of urine. In March, "The United Kingdom government has opposed a decision of the local authorities in New Delhi to construct a public toilet near the British High Commissioner's residence while mentioning that it is a security issue." India Times. In another honor, "a powerful Congressional Committee has recommended strengthening NATO Plus by including India. NATO Plus, currently NATO Plus 5, is a security arrangement that brings together NATO and five aligned nations - Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel and South Korea - to boost global defence cooperation." This would "facilitate seamless intelligence sharing" and "India would access the latest military technology". Apparently, this is to counter China but, "NATO Plus will mean sudden death for India-Russia defence cooperation," wrote MK Bhadrakumar. Also, "Russian oil accounts for nearly 20% of India's annual crude imports, up from just 2% in 2021, according to Indian state-controlled lender Bank of Baroda." BBC. All the hugs and honeyed words could disappear suddenly if Russia wins in Ukraine. "The Biden administration has decided to remain publicly quiet on India's democratic backsliding, according to senior US officials." The News. "A day after wrestling world body UWW condemned the police 'treatment' and detention of protesting wrestlers here on May 28," the International Olympic Committee said, "The treatment of the wrestling athletes over the weekend was very disturbing." TOI. Must remember that Russia was banned from the Football World Cup in Qatar in 2022 despite being in the playoffs because of the Ukraine war. The Hindu. All this bonhomie is not for free. As Don Corleone said to the undertaker, "Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me." Enjoy while it lasts.
