Pakistani cricketers have created furore after being accused of taking part in ' spot fixing ' wherein they bowl a no ball or drop a catch as per the dictates of betting syndicates. Apparently the betting is controlled by gangs based in India where people are cricket crazy and where most of the money is generated. However it is still too early to write an obituary for the game. Las Vegas did not close down just because the mafia was heavily involved in running the casinos. Betting is controlled by criminals only because it is illegal in India. If it was made legal people could bet openly on outcomes of matches and not have to deal with criminal bookies. The state would also make a lot of money through taxes. Wherever there is money there will be criminals. Bollywood is said to be financed heavily by criminals such as Dawood which accounts for so many ' Minorities ' getting starring roles in Hindi movies. Sport is no exception. The richest sport in the world is, of course, football or soccer. So far there has been no major scandal in football but that does not mean that nothing is going on. It is possible that one of these days the mother of all scandals will be exposed in football. Cricket will die a slow death in India because there is too much of it. Sports channels show cricket throughout the day. If there is no live match they show repeats. Real sports such as rugby, boxing, american football, to name a few, are never shown. Thus sports channels save money by treating Indians as morons capable of understanding nothing except cricket. But what do they care? They are making money. And our politicians are criminals anyway.
