Politicians and rats have all the fun.

Another day, another incident of boorish behavior by a politician, this time of the BJP. An officer of the Indian Police Service was reduced to tears by the threatening behavior of the politician. Why? Surely, a police officer should be able to stand up for herself and arrest anyone who interferes with her work? Not in India. She will be transferred or suspended, followed by years of harassment, as long as the BJP remains in power. In March, another politician boasted of hitting an officer of Air India 25 times with his slipper because he had been downgraded to economy. In response the government has decided to introduce a no-fly list in India, wherein an unruly passenger will be banned from flying for up to two years. Will politicians be included in that list? Nope. A surly grudging apology will be touted as a generous acknowledgement of a mistake by a great man. Another BJP fellow abused an officer of the Railways at 2 in the morning because there was no television in his room and the air-conditioner was not working properly. He even abused the officer's father. The ACs were found to be working fine the next morning. Firstly, he should have been asleep at 2 AM and secondly, he should be aware that in India the voltage drops when there is a heavy demand of electricity. With everyone switching on ACs the demand would have been very high. Not just politicians, government officials are also above the law. The Central Vigilance Commission has reported 50 cases of corruption and nepotism by officers but no action has been taken against them. Investigate the suspicious incidents thoroughly and then charge those where the evidence is solid. Not in India. Here no official can be investigated, let alone stand trial, without government permission. Which means politicians, and politicians try their best to protect the corrupt to protect their share of the booty. The government opposed a lifetime ban on convicted criminals from standing for elections. The same BJP is forcing newborn babies to get an Aadhaar number, which means they will be fingerprinted and have iris scans. Babies cannot give informed consent so this is a criminal assault and the record will last for life. Of course, it is being touted as a program to provide education and nutrition as the children grow up. Everyday about 180 children go missing in India and most are never found. Why not insert a microchip into babies as soon as they are born, as they do with dogs in developed countries. That will last through life and every movement we make can be recorded by sensors in malls, buses and airports. While citizens slowly lose their basic freedoms rats are free to enjoy themselves, at least in Bihar. 900,000 liters of seized alcohol have gone missing in Bihar and the police say that rats drank the lot. If only the pesky little things had Aadhaar.
