Salute to Mr. Vishwanath Chaturvedi of Lucknow who has filed some 3 dozen Public Interest Litigations, PILs in the UP High Court against politicians. His latest PIL relates to a scam in which subsidised foodgrains meant for the poor was sold off to private traders. Some 34 of 71 districts in UP were affected and 450 class 1 government officers and 800 of lower ranks may be involved. In total 5000 charges may have to be filed. The total cost of the scam maybe between Rs. 350 billion and 2 trillion. So blatant were the crooks that they carried on looting even though the scam was discovered in 2005. The reason for such confidence is the almost total immunity enjoyed by criminal politicians and thieving civil servants.
