In the past few days WikiLeaks has published over 90000 secret documents regarding the war in Afghanistan conveniently covering the years from 2002 to 2009 when Bush was in charge. Bush is widely regarded to be intellectually challenged while Mr. Obama is reckoned to be very intelligent. It seems a tad surprising that so many secret Pentagon documents regarding an ongoing war can be so easily revealed without a huge hue and cry when we just seen the farce surrounding the so called Russian spies. Disinformation has always been a legitimate instrument in wars and Obama is fighting on many fronts. There are the midterm polls in November widely believed to be for the Republicans to win. There is the commitment to get out of Afghanistan starting next year. There is Iran which is racing ahead with its program to build nuclear weapons. Although 90000 seems to be an awfully large number it must be only a fraction of reports generated over 8 years. So have these documents been selectively ' leaked ' and if so why? To put pressure on the Republicans by showing that it was George Bush who lost the war against the Taliban? To prepare the ground for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan? To prepare for a strike on Iran? How they are going to react against the ISI and Pakistan, who are clearly implicated in supplying arms and training to the Taliban, is unclear. Only a few days back Hillary Clinton was in that country promising more aid. Possibly Obama has marginalised her and the State Department and is playing a deep game. However, he must remember that these are mad dogs and you can never predict what they will do. Is he being too clever?
