Nearly one month on there is still no result of the Afghan elections. It is common belief that Hamid Karzai has stolen it and some votes are being recounted. The UN sacked its representative Mr. Galbraith for revealing the true extent of the fraud which shows the UN in poor light. This nothing new. After Kibaki stole the elections in Kenya the former Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Kofi Annan brokered a deal with the actual winner Mr. Odinga which allowed Kibaki to cling to the post of President. General McChrystal commanding the US forces in Afghanistan is asking for more forces but the American public is tired of the war and reluctant to sacrifice more money and lives. Eight US soldiers lost their lives yesterday to Taliban attacks. Yet the US was extremely successful at the beginning, just after 9/11, when they used the Northern Alliance to defeat the Taliban limiting their role in supplying money and weapons and using special forces selectively to hit the enemy at strategic points. The americans should forget about winning hearts and minds or about establishing a civilised democratic state in Afghanistan which is an impossible dream. They should go back to using Afghans to fight Afghans using drones to hit Taliban fighters and supply lines. They should also remind Karzai about the fate of his predecessor Najibullah and threaten to stop protecting him. After all you cannot civilise mad dogs.
