The Patna High Court struck down a ban on alcohol, notified by the Bihar government on 1 April 2016. In its judgement the court found the Act uncivilised because "personal punishments, both physical and monetary, punishment of confiscation of premises, and punishment to the community, are quite unreasonable and draconian and cannot be justified in a civilised society. It may be justified in a police state, which surely we are not". We would beg to differ. India is a crypto-police state where politicians can do anything because they control the police, politicians use taxpayer money for personal pleasure and citizens are branded with Aadhar numbers, like cattle. So what was the response of Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar to the unambiguous judgement? He has promised a tougher law with even more draconian punishments. It is ironic that under his law women face severe punishment if a man drinks, when women voted for him in large numbers because of his promise to ban alcohol. Trouble is that Nitish Kumar is unable to get rid of the monkey on his back, which is that, although he is the Chief Minister, his party is junior in the coalition governing Bihar and unless punishment is extremely stringent jungle raj will make billions of rupees from smuggling. A similar struggle is going on in Maharashtra where the BJP is in power with the support of the Shiv Sena. After the Supreme Court struck down a ban on dance bars the government introduced a ban on alcohol in these bars. The Supreme Court has struck down that ban as well but the government is determined keep an alcohol ban in place, saying that the bars will function as juice bars and they will have CCTVs, which will take away all privacy. Meanwhile, Karnataka has refused to release any water for Tamil Nadu from the Cauvery River dam because it needs water for drinking and irrigation. Karnataka has suffered scanty rainfall for 3 successive years, including 2016, whereas Tamil Nadu had floods last year. It is not Karnataka's fault that Tamil Nadu does not store any of the excess rainfall it receives every year because the builder mafia has blocked all canals and ponds, no doubt in cahoots with politicians. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has rejected Supreme Court orders to accept the Lodha Committee recommendations in full. How can a sports organisation dare to defy the Supreme Court? Because the BCCI is controlled by politicians who have been milking it for decades. They are not about to lose their honeypot without a fight, are they? You would think that the Supreme Court would throw all politicians into prisons for contempt of court. But, no, politicians are freely enjoying life. While Subroto Roy has been in prison for over 2 years for the same charge. India, after all, is a land of mystery.
