Sanjay Baru, who was the media adviser and chief spokesperson for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has written a book on former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, in which he claims that it was Rao who got us out of the financial crisis of 1991 and not Manmohan Singh, as has been portrayed by the Congress. In an interview Baru said that Rao was a successful politician so he took control of the Congress Party as its president. Rao had a political base, being elected 6 times to the Lok Sabha, whereas Manmohan Singh has never won an election, and so was under control. Sonia Gandhi saw Rao as a threat to the dominance of her family and threat to her son, Rahul becoming prime minister as a matter of right. Why is all this coming out now? Because, for the first time, an opposition party, the BJP, has absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, so people feel relatively safe speaking out, without fear of being harassed by the police. Why are the Gandhis still controlling Congress? Historian, Ramachandra Guha thinks that, starting with Nehru, the Gandhi family has been involved in the history of India, Congress leaders think that there is still an aura around the family and they maybe controlling the finances of the party. But the main reason maybe a fear of a complete disintegration of the Congress, as various leaders fight for ascendancy, so each one gives up his right to be king for a piece of the pie. What about the real Gandhi, who has been built up as Mahatma, or 'great soul', and has been nominated as the Father of the Nation? He has been the standard bearer for the Congress, even though he has been dead for over 68 years. Gandhi is useful for glorifying poverty, so that elections can be won by throwing handouts. Anything labeled as 'luxury', for instance cars or air travel, attract huge taxes which make them too expensive for the middle class, let alone the poor. This does not apply to politicians who fly first class and spend the summer in cooler climes of Europe. The other advantage of celebrating Gandhi is that it gives a reason for 'strategic restraint' in our relations with Pakistan, which allowed our politicians to offer our soldiers and citizens as sacrificial goats to Pakistan inspired terrorism, while allowing Pakistanis to work in Bollywood films. Was Gandhi such a huge saint as he is made out to be? Seems that there is no doubt that he was a racist who thought that black people were "savage" and "raw" and should not use the same entrance to the post office as whites. Professors at the University of Ghana want his statue to be removed because he was "inherently racist". He was an admirer of the British and much of his actions were dictated by the British. Which maybe why we have never asked the British to pay for the Indian holocaust, like Germany had pay for the Jewish one. Today is MK Gandhi's birthday, so no alcohol anywhere to drown our sorrows.
