Money, not employment.

"India added nearly 4.7 crore (47 million) jobs during the year-ended March, bringing total employment to 643.3 million across 27 sectors, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data." This is 6% more than 596.7 million in March 2023. "Over the past five years, total employment has risen from 534.4 million in FY20." NDTV. This came right after we learnt that "Citi (Citigroup Inc.) estimates India will need to create about 12 million jobs a year over the next decade to absorb the number of new entrants to the labor market. Based on a growth rate of 7% India can generate only 8-9 million jobs a year, the bank's economists Samiran Chakraborty and Baqar Zaidi wrote in a report." BS. Forget 12 million, India added 47 million, nearly 4 times as much. A loud raspberry (wikipedia) to Citi. But, why the RBI? Our Council of Ministers has a Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, a Minster of Commerce and Industry, a Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Industry, a Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, and, crucially, a Minister of Labour and Employment, and, a Minister of Statistics and Programme Implemetation. india.gov.in. In the United States, "Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 206,000 in June, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.1%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported." In the UK, it is the Office for National Statistics and in the European Union, it is the European Commission that report on unemployment. Why is our central bank reporting on employment? India has dropped two places to 129 out of 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap report 2024, released by the World Economic Forum. Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan are ranked higher. DH. India's female labor force participation rate (LFPR) was 33%, lower than that of Saudi Arabia. World Bank. "In Vietnam, where a factory boom has been especially momentous, more than 68% of women and girls older than 15 are working for some sort of pay, according to data compiled by the World Bank." In China it is 63%, in Thailand it is 59% and in Indonesia it is 53%. DH. If, according to the RBI, some 643.3 million out of a total population of 1,442 million (worldometer) are working, why "The Cabinet led by Prime Minister has decided that the Central Government will provide free food grains to about 81.35 crore (813.5 million) under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for a period of five years with effect from 1st January, 2024." pib.gov.in. Especially concerning, "India's youth continue to grapple with soaring unemployment rates, with nearly 83% of the jobless population belonging to this demographic, as per the India Employment Report 2024, jointly published by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Institute of Human Development (IHD). Mint. Central banks control monetary policy and manage their currencies. IMF. Perhaps the RBI should concentrate on our inflation and the rupee. Not employment.
